Table des matières

The Ski Doo Freeride is the perfect snowmobile for rhythmic mountain riding. With super stiff suspension and a top-of-the-line package, it gives you everything you need to devour the snow. The Summit models are lighter and have a narrower ski spread. The Freeride models focus on chassis rigidity and for jumps… Very big jumps.

For 2024 we have several technical revisions. And above all, it’s the first time that the turbo engine is offered with the 146 inch track. You get a real wheelie monster that points its skis at all times. The 850 E-Tec Turbo R with 146″ track is the perfect combo for performing spectacular maneuvers. Re-entry, jump, bowtie, etc. This version is certainly not the most precise mountain snowmobile. However, it has a handling that few other models can provide. And an undeniable fun factor. Here’s a little more about the Ski Doo Freeride 850 E-Tec Turbo R 146po 2024.

Engine

To power the Ski Doo Freeride, the manufacturer offers two versions of its 850 E-Tec engine. First, the 165-horsepower naturally-aspirated version, which has been around for seven seasons now. Then, at the top of the power range, the turbocharged R engine delivers a generous 180 horsepower. What’s more, this power will be maintained up to an altitude of 8,000 feet with the pressure produced by the turbo. That’s a considerable 25% advantage over a naturally aspirated engine at such an altitude. As a bonus, the power curve is more aggressive in the mid-range for strong acceleration. The only drawback is that there is a certain delay in response when the gas pedal is pressed. Nothing dramatic, but it requires anticipating a fraction of a second before your maneuvers.

REV Gen5 Platform

Introduced last year, the REV Gen5 platform is a complete overhaul. It brings many improvements for the mountain segment. First of all, its look has been completely revamped and offers a narrower fairing. This is an excellent improvement to limit drag in the snow and therefore the effort required.

The two-section left panel allows for faster oil filling with its small compartment. Also, the panel design now makes it possible to use outside air to cool the belt. This is really a great improvement to keep our clutch optimal and in good condition longer. Compared to before when we used the air from the engine compartment which was already at a certain temperature. The longevity of the belt and the entire clutch system should be extended.

The running boards have also been redesigned to limit drag in the snow and therefore the effort required. The most forward position on the running boards allows the rider to be even further forward. This makes steep mountain climbs easier.

The ergonomics have been adjusted to make it easier to move and perform maneuvers. You feel a lightness in the direction while being sent back to a feeling of solidity. Bumps are just obstacles to overcome and even become fun. Three, four, five feet in the air… landings are always smooth.

The huge 10.25″ touchscreen cannot be ignored. It efficiently gathers all the basic information and much more. Moreover, the application allows us to efficiently see our playground and to stay informed of the state of our vehicle in real time. We also appreciate knowing the temperature of the belt to avoid premature breakage.

Other improvements and features worth mentioning

With this new platform, Ski Doo now offers even more standard features. On the 2024 models, we see the appearance of an even more powerful and precise brake. Courtesy of Brembo, with an adjustable lever for better ergonomics. This one responds quickly with a single finger to operate it.

On the suspension side, we find the big KYB Pro 40 shocks both in the front and in the back. They are certainly oversized and this is what we need to make the biggest jumps. At the rear, we get the tMotion-XT, which no longer offers flex like the previous generation. This greatly improves driving precision. In addition, the rail reinforcements are standard on the Freeride models to contribute to the model’s robustness. Another noteworthy feature: Ski Doo also redesigned the spindles to give them a more aggressive attack when maneuvering on side hills.

Driving impressions

When you take the controls, you immediately notice the ergonomics of the mountain segment. The bare handlebars and a clear view already inspire us to perform all the feats that we will be able to do without hindrance. We start the engine with the SHOT system, which we love for its efficiency and limited weight. The roar of the turbo engine is heard and we are ready to dig huge trenches. The 850 E-Tec Turbo R engine is a marvel of technology.

For its constant power, we must acknowledge the work of the brand’s engineers. There is very little lag time for the boost to take effect. Of course, there is a certain delay and you have to plan a little in advance for these maneuvers. However, this inconvenience is quickly brushed aside. A 180 horsepower cavalry propels us from all sides and makes the skis point to the sky at all times.

For our test ride, we chose the 146″ version specifically for its playfulness, or even its demonic wheelie machine. This is the first year that this length of track is offered in combination with the turbocharger… We LOVE it!

The Ski Doo Freeride 850 E-Tec Turbo R 146″ is without a doubt a pure mountain beast. Even so, it moves very well on the trail. The 146″ version allows for a considerable amount of trail riding to get to our favorite spot. It’s not designed for long distances over rough terrain, but it performs well. And what a kick every time you hit the throttle with such traction. Trail sections are now less flat!
Let’s go back to its playground, deep snow. The Freeride is an ultimate snowmobile, trippy for its wheelies and you can literally play in the snow. However, it’s not the most precise mount when it comes to side hill riding. It is all forgiven and longer versions (154 and 165 inches) come to compensate for this aspect.

Highlights

  • Powerful engines available: 850 E-TEC with instant response or the TURBO R version that provides 180 horsepower up to an altitude of 8000 feet.
  • REV Gen5 platform with several new features that make mountain snowmobiles even more powerful.
  • Optional 10.25″ touch screen. It is well integrated and contains a multitude of information. Everything can be connected with the BRP GO application.

Points to improve

  • There is a certain amount of lag in the response of the turbo engine. We must therefore plan our maneuvers a fraction of a second in advance.
  • There is already a space on the top of the machine (cover). However, it can hold a pair of gloves at most. Of course, Ski Doo has planned ahead with an available accessory to make it more roomy. Why isn’t it standard with the asking price?
  • Two color choices. Either the Neo Mint that we love… or not at all. Otherwise, you’ll have to settle for all black. It lacks a color choice or the possibility to choose color combos.

Conclusion

Combining quality components and a powerful engine, the Ski Doo Freeride 2024 is certainly in my top 3. This test was unfortunately over too quickly at the SnowShoot… Let’s hope we can get our hands on one next season to push it to its limits.
